Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea. The uvea is made up of several different layers. If the infection is in the front of the uvea it is close to the iris and called iritis. If the infection is in the back of the uvea it is referred to as choroiditis. A fungus such as histoplasmosis, a virus such as herpes, or a parasite such as toxoplasmosis can cause the infection. Uveitis is a serious condition that is treated with eye drops or injection. It needs to be treated quickly because if left untreated the eye could become scarred.
Symptoms
What you can do
If you experience any of these symptoms call your eye doctor. Regular eye exams will detect uveitis and cure the condition before it leads to other serious problems. If not treated, the infection may lead to cataracts or glaucoma.
