Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is leading cause of vision reduction in people over 65. The macula is an area of the retina located in the back of the eye that allows people to see detail when reading or looking straight ahead.

Macular Degeneration has no cure.  However, in rare cases of “wet” macular degeneration, laser treatment may be recommended.  “Wet” macular degeneration is caused by blood vessels leaking in the eye.  Laser treatment is simple and painless.  It may stop the progression of the disease but may not bring back any lost vision.

Symptoms

Macular degeneration may have no symptoms at first, and if it progresses slowly may cause no change in lifestyle.

  • Difficulty reading without extra light or magnification
  • Objects in front of you may be distorted or abnormal in shape, size, or color
  • Objects may seem to jump when you look directly at them.

In severe cases of macular degeneration, there can be a blind spot in the center of vision

What you can do

Early detection is the only way to increase the chances of slowing the disease.  The doctor can tell you if you are experiencing “wet” macular degeneration.  In such case, the doctor will recommend laser surgery.  Your doctor will give you information about nutritional supplements such antioxidants, vitamin A, C, and E that will help improve eye health.  The doctor will give you an amlser grid to check for macular degeneration.  Not smoking, and having a ultra-violet coating on your glasses helps reduce the risks of macular degeneration.
