Cataracts are a normal part of aging, affecting 80 percent of people over the age 60. A cataract is a condition that makes the eye’s lens cloudy. This clouding prevents light from traveling through the eye making vision blurred. There is no cure for cataracts, but the condition is treatable with a 15 minute, routine surgery. During surgery, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens.
Symptoms
- Blurred vision similar to looking through a piece of wax paper
- Problems with glare
- Halos around lights especially at night
- Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription
- Presence of a milky whiteness in the pupil as the cataract progresses
What you can do
If you experience the symptoms above let your doctor know. Early detection can help the doctor diagnose and perform surgery to help you see clearly again To help reduce the risk of cataracts, doctors recommend taking Vitamin C, having an ultra-violet coating on your glasses, and not smoking.
